fred1st > Technically, these are not mountains, but "erosional remnants"--what is left of thousands of feet of volcanic ash, dust and soil where once a shallow sea covered this part of the American West and then wooly mammoths roamed.
fred1st > This image (where I found just the vantage point to include the photographer's shadow) was created from six images seamlessly merged with Autostitch. It is impossible to get a sense of scale, of the distance to the far horizon--probably 50 miles away.
fred1st > With the rains that fell for 4 of our 5 days in Dakota, the little stream is flowing below, and the nearby vegetation lends a dash of color other than red-brown-gray-tan to the landscape. And those interesting clouds certainly lent a nice touch to the few photos of the day.
fred1st > I could have stayed here for an hour as the light changed every second! What you can't tell is that the wind is blowing so hard I'm having a hard time standing, much less holding the camera steady as I pan to capture the three images that make up this striking composite. I'll print this one, and frame it.
fred1st > I would have liked to have had several hours just to sit on a little ledge below this precipice, look out on the eons of time this view tells about, and try, just try to comprehend how fleeting our short lives are. And how precious.
fred1st > Some of my daughter's neighbors had taken great pains to "plant" this wonderful but completely DEAD tree in a rock garden near their house. Nice touch!
fred1st > Daughter and granddaughter Abby
fred1st > Abby and her future sister's foot (ultrasound 4D)
fred1st > Hang time
