fred1st > Goatsbeard or Oyster Plant, a "giant" member of the dandelion family (Asteraceae)--a beautiful illustration of form and function.
fred1st > Another "chance" photograph on Allegheny Spring road one spring morning when time and place were just so and I was carrying my camera. Imagine the Dope Slap moment if I had NOT been able to capture the rising spirits of the morning fog!
fred1st > "What's this, Dumpa?" Abby asks.
fred1st > Better Without Batteries, page 41--a description of the best kind of Child's Play!

"A place near home. A simple game, she makes the rules. The easy flow of mind and hands. So little space to be for her a wilderness, so vast a time in Abby’s eternal present, an afternoon lost in play."
fred1st > Somehow (since I was no where near in full control of the book for most of its gestational life) this image ended up being the largest one in the book. Oh well.
fred1st > A view of the pasture from the back porch, barn just off image to the right.
fred1st > The familiar barn and the new garden shed attached to the "concentration camp for carrots and cabbage" that we built to keep the deer ("rats on stilts") out of the garden. The house is off image to the right.
fred1st > This is the window of the Concord Primative Baptist Church in Meadows of Dan. I helped with a piece on the Mabry's (after whom the Mill was named) who attended this church. The photograph was included in the article that appeared in the Blue Ridge Country Magazine.
fred1st > Double Springs School--that looks enough like an old church that it illustrates the Parlor Fan Jesus page 46
