fred1st > The five ravens that participated in the afternoon games were taking turns riding the winds up the steep canyon off the west side of Buffalo, dipping above and below the line of sight, showing off to each other with fancy aerobatics that involved impossibly quick 180 degree turns, barrel rolls, and plunges (like the one about to happen here) where the bird pulled wings tight against the body in a power-dive. It was truly amazing!
fred1st > I was heartbroken that in this image, the bird was not in focus. But now that I've had a chance to get used to it, I sort of like the ghost-like qualities, the silver enigma hovering over the mountain face.

It's remarkable how brilliant and silver this very black bird can appear when the feathers reflect rather than absorb the light, when seen from just the right angle.
fred1st > This bird was carrying something white--I think it was a feather (a toy?)--that seemed to be part of a game with his companions, a kind of tag that earlier had involved a food item (small mammal).
fred1st > I never would have thought a raven's feathers would have this rusty cast about them, but with the light shining directly through the primaries, this is what the camera saw.
fred1st > For photographic purposes, I would have had the bird up just off the point of the rocky ledge, but he would not cooperate. He's hard to make out against the fall foliage.
fred1st > Too often, these shadowy birds look as if they were superimposed on the background, like mere silhouttes of featureless black against the color of fall.
fred1st > This is by far the best of the raven images and would make a very nice 8 x 10. I will be printing up some samples soon, and hope to offer the optimized print for sale--especially to those for whom Buffalo Mountain has special significance.
