Fred First is a writer, teacher, physical therapist and photographer enjoying semi-retirement in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He writes daily to his blog, Fragments from Floyd, and his "memoir of landscape", Slow Road Home, is available at Amazon.com. He is currently working on a second book of photography, nature and the rekindling of native curiosity for growing and grown-up children.

With the rains that fell for 4 of our 5 days in Dakota, the little stream is flowing below, and the nearby vegetation lends a dash of color other than red-brown-gray-tan to the landscape. And those interesting clouds certainly lent a nice touch to the few photos of the day.

Along a Floyd County road that I swear, only sees two vehicles pass about every two weeks, and they showed up just for me, to add interest to the background. The wind was blowing crazy the day I took this image, and a storm loomed--giving a nice, flat lighting in the middle of the afternoon. / Fred First / Floyd County, VA
